Fourth Evolution

“Carrier specific” symbol paint scheme--or “G” system--The same Lightning Bolt as before except side number moved from nose cowl to landing gear strut door, and tail side numbers now moved as far forward as possible. Some numbers appear fully on the fixed vertical stabilizer; some have the rear number either partially or fully appearing on the movable rudder. There is no "Sky Pirates" sticker below cockpit.

41 is VF-85, on deck of Shangri-La.

This master photograph is taken while refueling the British Destroyer H.M.S. Nizam, which places this style after leaving Pearl Harbor on the cruise and an evolved evolution of the Lightning Bolt paint scheme.

52 and 5(?) are VF-85, on deck of Shangri-La.

50 is VF, on deck with 21 VBF in new Z paint. This proves late date (during Z transition) and yet still some of the older style, larger and further back side numbers survived without replacement or being repainted. Number 50 fully on moveable rudder surface. Note: Rudder is off-center, creating the illusion of a third barb on the front slope of the lightning bolt, however it's the vertical stabilizer blocking the view and creating the extra barb effect if you look close. New versions of paint placement were probably only done when aircraft were brought on board as replacements. Survivors simply stayed as they were (except for Z transition).
